Don’t be fooled by ‘airtime con artists’

The alleged con artist requested two R180 MTN and two R275 airtime vouchers

An Estcourt resident believes that ‘airtime con artists’ are on the loose. This was after he received a suspicious call from an unknown person who claimed to be a local doctor.

“The person told me that he was this doctor who is familiar to me and then said that he was locked up at the police station and needed airtime to bribe police officers,” explained the resident.Although shocked at this request, the resident said he ‘played’ the alleged con artist and said that he would come to the police station to give assistance.
“He immediately said no and told me to read the airtime numbers to him over the phone. I knew that something was amiss because why would the doctor be calling me for airtime and the person on the phone didn’t sound like him,” said the resident.
The alleged con artist requested two R180 MTN and two R275 airtime vouchers. The resident did not oblige and called the doctor who said that he was at his surgery and warned the resident that the call was a scam. “I would like to advise other readers to be cautious. Do not fall for these airtime con artists,” concluded the resident.
