Sithembile protests continue as several businesses shut-shop
Township erupts again as protestors show their anger
The drama continues in Sithembile as angry parents and the youth had yet again closed the street with burning tyres.
Businesses in the industrial area, closed to the entrance to Sithembile closed this morning as protesters converged toward the businesses.
Workers told the Courier that they felt unsafe and employers decided to shut shop.
Several Sithembile Schools have closed today as the children protester forced them out of classes.
Last night police fired rubber bullets and several people, said not be involved in the protest, were injured.
The chaos unfolded after allegations that local councillor, Lungile Mbhele, had ‘chosen her own people for jobs at a Transnet project in the area’.
A promised community meeting on Monday where Councillor Mbhele and Mayor Mahaye would have addressed residents never materialised.
However, Councillor Mbhele told the Courier this morning that the protest was ‘now political and added that IFP supporters were involved’.
