Pensioner attacked by pack of dogs
Ripping through clothes and flesh, the dogs attacked until Mrs Mabaso was lying bloodied on the ground, trying to keep the animals away from her face.
Her screams did little to stave off the dogs, and they covered her arms, legs and back in bites.
For Delisile Mabaso, a pensioner, her walk to town through a veld thoroughfare last week turned into a nightmare, as she was allegedly attacked by four guard dogs. Mrs Mabaso explained she was walking through the area as usual, when she heard the growling, and the dogs attacked.
“The dogs attacked in stages. Every time I turned around to face one, another would attack from the back.
“They were like pack animals,” she claimed.
Ripping through clothes and flesh, the dogs attacked until Mrs Mabaso was lying bloodied on the ground, trying to keep the animals away from her face. When other commuters in the area noticed the attack, they contacted medical services and police to assist, and the dog’s handler was alerted.
“She was on the floor, and they were just biting her. She tried to cover her face, but they just bit her hands,” alleged a witness.
EMRS Paramedics responded to the call, and said Mrs Mabaso’s injuries were horrific.
“Her back, hands, legs, shoulders – every part of her is covered in bites or scratches. They are so many wounds on her that they are uncountable,” said on-scene paramedics.
In the veld where the incident occurred, the dogs were guarding a small farming project. Their handler explained they were usually locked up during the day, and had managed to escape the limits of the farmyard during the course of the night.
The handler subdued the dogs, but the damage to Mrs Mabaso was already done.
Mrs Mabaso was rushed to Madadeni Provincial Hospital for treatment, and was discharged this week. “I am feeling much better. Very scared of dogs now, but I’m feeling better,” said Mrs Mabaso.
The dog handler explained this was the first time an incident like this had occurred, and the dogs were generally quite calm. However, sources revealed the dogs were involved in another incident two weeks ago.
In the presence of the dog handler, two of the four dogs still growled and were ready to attack police officers and medical personnel. The only thing stopping them seemed to be the chain keeping them leashed to a tree.
The police have since opened a case of keeping a vicious or violent animal.
The dog handler attributed the viciousness of the animals to a recent birth of pups.
