Cars hoot, drivers cheer, as traffic light finally starts working

The only question is: will the lights still work when the contractors leave?

There is an almost party atmosphere this afternoon at the busy Tatham/Union/Karelandman Streets intersection when the traffic lights started finally working.

Following a threat by the Endumeni Residents’ Association to have the lights fixed themselves next Sunday, March 22, contractors from Durban were in Dundee today probably under the instructions of the Provincial Transport Department whose jurisdiction includes this robot and the Pick n Pay Centre lights.

FC Bester, Endumeni Residents’ Association chairman, was there and was pleased that the lights were finally being fixed.

“Just a pity that we have to threaten just to get a job done in the name of road safety,” he commented.

Councillor Anthon Raubenheimer has fought a running battle with the Provincial Transport Department to repair the lights after they denied the right of Endumeni Municipality to step in and carry out the repairs.  The lights have been dysfunctional for almost a year.
