The theft and sale of scrap metal is a lucrative business in Estcourt with many criminals resorting to stealing whatever they can get their hands on including taps, manhole covers and electric cable. This causes widespread disruption amongst the community and even poses a hazard as criminals thrive on a quick buck.

Recently police made a breakthrough when they arrested a suspect who was found selling copper wire on Friday, March 13. “Police officials received a tip-off from the scrap dealers that there were suspects selling copper wire. Swift action by police resulted in one suspect, aged 23, being arrested,” commented police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel TM Mabaso.

The suspect appeared in the Estcourt Magistrates Court on Monday, March 16 on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.
“The police appreciate the act of reporting these cases by scrap metal dealers and also extend a request to other dealers to do the same as this is a very serious matter, which can place the country at a standstill if the culprits are not caught and face the law,” said Lt Col Mabaso.
