Learners soar despite challenges
Despite the poor conditions of the grounds and the soaring temperatures, the learners managed to perform at their best
Learners at ML Sultan Estcourt Primary have had a very challenging month of athletics. The learners entered their first trials on February 13, where they had to compete against other schools in the Wembezi Ward Athletics Competition.
Despite the poor conditions of the grounds and the soaring temperatures, the learners managed to perform at their best. Mbalenhle Hlatswayo was victorious in the girls under 10, 100m and 80m followed by her peer Sibongakuhle Mabaso in the same events. Philasande Lueni went on to claim first position in the 80m and 100m in the boys under 10 division. This achievement allowed the learners to participate at the next level of the athletics competition, on February 20 where learners participated in the Circuit Athletics Competition.
Once again they achieved outstanding results, Mbalenhle Hlatswayo won the 100m and 80m and Sibongakuhle Mabaso came second in the 100m.
Philasande Lueni won the 100m and 80m. Many learners participated in the shot putt event with good results. These learners returned for the district competition, which was held in Estcourt on February 27 with Mbalenhle Hlatswayo taking second position in the 100m and 80m respectively while Siyamthanda Mtshali was placed first in the boys under 11 shot putt event and Nomalungelo Kubheka also placed first in the girls under 13 shot putt event.
ML Sultan Estcourt Primary School is very proud of the learners’ achievements. We wish to congratulate Mbalenhle Hlatswayo, Siyamthanda Mtshali and Nomalungelo Kubheka who participated at the Provincial Athletics Competitions held at Kings Park Stadium, Durban on March 6.
