The Ladysmith District faces a tough matric year ahead. The District has the fourth highest number of pupils who failed to meet the minimum requirements to pass Grade 11, yet they were still pushed through into matric. An apparent ‘progression policy’ allows pupils to fail only once between Grade 10 and 12. After that, they automatically get into the matric class.
A total of 12,049 pupils from KwaZulu-Natal were promoted to matric in accordance with the National Education Policy, despite failing to meet the academic requirements in 2014. 1520 of the pupils promoted for ‘no apparent reason’ hail from the Uthukela District.
The figure is somewhat ‘cringe-worthy’ for those who put in the hours to make it to matric. Now pupils are apparently receiving ‘marks’ for ‘mahala’.
Number of Grade 11 pupils who were pushed through to Grade 12 this year in each education district:
- Amajuba (Newcastle): 792.
- Ilembe (Ballito): 1 322.
- Sisonke (southern KZN): 766.
- Ugu (Port Shepstone): 236.
- Umkhanyakude (Jozini): 3 024.
- Umlazi (greater Durban): 1 601.
- Umzinyathi (Dundee): 325.
- Uthukela (Ladysmith): 1 520.
- Uthungulu (Richards Bay): 216.
- Zululand (Ulundi): 2 247.
