New Republic School – Choir brings back gold

LAST Monday, May 11, the NRS choir took part in the ATKV Applous Choir Competition hosted by Ferrum High School in Newcastle.

They participated in the category, Non-mother tongue speakers of Afrikaans. The requirements were to sing one prescribed Afrikaans composition, another Afrikaans song, a song of their own choice in any language and a traditional song in an African language. All the choirs country-wide have to meet the ATKV criteria in order to be considered for a certificate.

The NRS choir was lauded for their selection of songs, which included a potpourri of traditional songs from Brazil, Spain and Mexico, as well as the Zulu song, “WeMahlalela”. The last song, which was performed with energetic movements, made a big impression on the audience and the adjudicators alike.

The adjudicators were Prof Petru Gräbe and Dr Sarita Hauptfleisch of Pretoria. Their general comment was: “An excellent choir with predominantly good intonation and musical touch. You sing with abandon! Well done.”

The NRS choir was awarded a gold certificate for their performance. Congratulations to the choir, their conductor, Mrs Ria Grobler, and accompanist, Mrs Ilse van der Walt, as well as Mrs Elzeth Klynsmith who had to stand in as accompanist at short notice. The choir would like to thank Mr T Mdlalose and Mr S Mtshali for their help with the management of the choir, as well as Mr J Jonker, the NRS staff and parents for their support.

Wintersport teen Glencoe: Op Dinsdag, 12 Mei, het NRS op ons tuisvelde teen Glencoe kragte gemeet. Die uitslae was as volg (NRS se tellings eerste): Netbal: o/10 9-2, o/11 0-13, o/12A 9-7 en die eerste span 12-5. Rugby: o/10 10-5, o/11 39-0, die tweede span 5-7 en die eerste span 41-12. Dogtershokkie: Die eerste span wen 4-0. Skaak: NRS wen 6-3.
