Nando’s Gate is closed – Mayor Mahaye

When pressed for comment, Mayor Mahaye conceded that the official in charge could have done better planning to arrange meals for their trip.

Nearly a year after the so-called Nandos Gate hit the headlines, Mayor Thulani Mahaye has explained that while the R52 000 spent on flame-grilled chicken may be judged as ‘irregular it certainly was not fruitless’.
He was reacting to comments by the DA KZN spokesperson for local government, George Mari, that Endumeni is one of nine municipalities in the province facing a forensic probe.
“Council had decided to send 250 children (maidens) to the Reed Dance in Nongoma in September last year. Just before the group departed, one of the municipal officials discovered that no arrangements had been made to feed the children during the four-day stay in Nongoma. My office was called as food had to be urgently arranged. Quotes were called for and Nando’s found to be the cheapest. These are children – we had to act in a humanitarian manner.”
When pressed for comment, Mayor Mahaye conceded that the official in charge could have done better planning to arrange meals for their trip. “This year planning will be in place. There will be no repeat of any emergency spending to feed the children but for now there is no Nando’s Gate.”
Housing list concerns
Turning to allegations received by the Courier that ‘wealthy’ people – including businessmen – had received RDP houses at the expense of the poor – many of whom have been on a waiting list for years – Mayor Mahaye said this is unacceptable and those with evidence should contact the municipality.
“The beneficiary list for housing is drawn up via a housing committee and the Department of Human Settlements who check to ensure beneficiaries qualify in terms of house- hold income and other criteria. It is disturbing to hear that wealthy people abuse the system, get a house and rent out the same house to someone less fortunate.
“We have anti-corruption unit within the municipality. Those with evidence should come forward and provide us with that evidence. You can contact us anonymously too.” he explained.
