Railway clean up on the right track but…

However, the downside is that the cutting of the grass has also exposed the rampant dumping on the site. This is caused, largely, by an apparently mentally disturbed vagrant who takes domestic rubbish bags to the railway area.

Transnet have kept to their word and the overgrown vegetation around the Dundee Railway Station has been cleared. Members of the Tourism Committee inspected the property last week and were pleased to see that the long grass and weeds, in and around the tracks and station, had been cleared.
However, the downside is that the cutting of the grass has also exposed the rampant dumping on the site.
This is caused, largely, by an apparently mentally disturbed vagrant who takes domestic rubbish bags to the railway area.
He ruffles through the bags, takes what he wishes and then leaves the rest to litter the area.
It has been suggested that Social Services and/or the SAPS take the man to a place of safety, but it is unclear at this stage how far this process is.

Tourism Dundee is to ask Transnet to also cut down the undergrowth on the other side of the Victoria Street bridge where the long grass poses a fire threat during winter.
Transnet have welcomed an offer by Endumeni Municipality to clean up the area and have put officials in touch with local Transnet officials to ensure workers’s safety during any clean-up on the property.
The area is on the main entrance to Dundee and the dumping is clearly visible to any visiting motorist. Tourism Dundee has also expressed concern over the out-of-control littering that defaces the area across the road from the taxi rank on Victoria Street.
This area is especially littered over weekends and also visible to any tourist off to visit Talana Museum.
