VRYHED Hospital’s Operation Thumamina Project scooped an award on Outstanding Achievement for Innovation and Best Practice, at this year’s prestigious MEC’s annual service excellence awards (MASEA) ceremony.

The annual event which was held in Durban ICC on May 15, started off as an initiative by the KZN MEC for Health that started in 2014 to promote better service in all health facilities.

The award received by Vryheid falls under the category that which recognises innovative initiatives and projects, which assist in improving service delivery in core and non-core functions.

The Operation Thumamina Project is an innovation by the Hospital’s CEO, Ms Sibongile Nkonyane which is a catalyst in the Millennium Developmental Goals as it assists with the reduction of maternal deaths.

Since the project started in 2012, maternal deaths at Vryheid Hospital have drastically reduced from 7 to 2 in 2014/2015.
