Residents complain of ‘young hooligans’ partying in park, drinking, exposing themselves

MacPhail Park is the new Coronation Park as the war of the parks takes a new turn.

A group of  up to 40 young people – thought to be high school children out on a tour – partied and drank openly in public and left behind heaps of liquor bottles and other litter in MacPhail Park,on the corner of Douglas, Smith and Oldcare Streets late yesterday, Friday, afternoon.

Residents said there appeared to be no adult supervision as the youngsters – who had arrived in  NP and GP registered vehicles – pulled up at the park at about 4.30pm and continued partying and drinking until well after sunset.

Reacting to complaints, the Courier arrived on the scene and witnessed a group of about six young people – including teenage girls – barely able to stand.  Obviously intoxicated, they held on to each other as they attempted to step down from the pavement into the gutter and walk towards the vehicles.

A group of young men shouted and brandished their liquor bottles while one young man took off his pants in a blatant show of disregard for the much-vaunted by-laws trumpeted this week by the Endumeni Municipality.

It is not clear if the police were called as in the past, and from experiences at the much abused Coronation Park, members of the public know that the SAPS are reluctant to enforce any ‘noise disturbance or drinking in public offences’.
