UPDATE: Oval Track’s brazen burglars strike again
“When I came home in the evening, the men came again asking for help, which I agreed to." It was only when they arrived at the Oval Track the elderly man realised he had been tricked into aiding with a crime.
Burglars broke into the Oval Track’s clubhouse last night, making it the second burglary this week.
The perpetrators attempted to steal a fridge, and it is speculated they were involved in the burglary on Monday night.
However, this time the men lured an elderly man along to help them break the law.
“Four men came to me earlier during the day and said they had bought a fridge and bakkie, but the bakkie had broken down before they could fetch the fridge and they wanted to hire me to get it,” said the man.
However, due to prior engagements he turned them away.
“When I came home in the evening, the men came again asking for help, which I agreed to.”
It was only when they arrived at the Oval Track the elderly man realised he had been tricked into aiding with a crime.
“I asked why we were there when it was so dark and no one was around, but they jumped over the fence. When I saw them walking towards me with the fridge, I decided to call the police immediately.”
In the process, William van der Bergh from the Oval Track committee noticed activity at the track and decided to investigate.
“I asked the man what was going on and told him to stay put until the police arrived.”
Mr van der Bergh then called other committee members to rush to the Oval Track. However, the four suspects fled the scene and dropped the fridge in the process.
“I can’t believe their audacity, saying they had bought the bakkie and then tried to hire someone to come get the fridge,” fumed Boet Buys, an Oval Track committee member.
The matter was reported to the police and is being investigated.
