Blue Lions set to roar at King’s Park

Who knows – perhaps one of them will be asked to join the Sharks or Stormers juniors next year, should they impress those watching.

Glencoe’s Blue Lions are to roar in front of a capacity crowd at King’s Park stadium, Durban, on Saturday.
Sarel Cilliers’ first rugby team have been invited to play against Voortrekker High School of Pietermaritzburg as a 4pm curtain raiser to the huge Sharks/Stormers game that kicks off at 7pm.
On Friday, the enthusiastic boys, smartly turned out in their formal school wear, performed their famous ‘Haka’ on the municipal lawn, in front of Councillors and officials.
The team has been given a R15 000 donation from the Endumeni Municipality to assist with accommodation and travelling to Durban.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for these local youngsters to play in front of a full-house in Durban. Who knows – perhaps one of them will be asked to join the Sharks or Stormers juniors next year, should they impress those watching.
“These top teams are always looking for new talent,” said Councillor Anthon Raubenheimer.
Speaker, Siduduzo Mdluli, representing Mayor Thulani Mahaye, who was at a memorial service in Nquthu, said ‘Sarel’s Lions are well-known for sending a shiver down the backs of any opposition every time they run onto the field’.
“We know that these boys will be great ambassadors for our town and wish them every success.”
Coach, Dave van der Westhuizen, thanked Endumeni for the donations and said this ‘team is raring to go and perform at the highest level in Durban’.
“Locals schools from Northern KZN are often overlooked when it comes to such big occasions. We are honoured to have been chosen to play at King’s Park and will ensure that everyone there will sit up and take note of the Sarel Cilliers Lions.”
