Injecting time and money into youth development

The tournament has been split between the Newcastle and Dannhauser Circuit.

The sixth annual Dr Mathaila Spectacular Soccer, Netball and Maths Tournament is currently underway.

The tournament, which started off as a Madadeni community service project of Dr Lepulane Mathaila, has evolved into a district event.

“This tournament started off in Madadeni, but it can’t go naked. We want it to represent the district and we will continue to develop so that pupils across the district can understand the importance of maths as well as sports,” explained Dr Mathaila.

This year, Dr Mathaila has extended the programme to 18 high schools across the Amajuba District.

Last week Thursday, pupils, parents, teachers and South African Football Association (SAFA) officials gathered at Scrapyard to learn just how the tournament will be played this year.

“The maths competition has already been completed and the winner walked away with R2 000,” explained project co-ordinator, and Chairperson of South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) Amajuba District, Mandla Nkosi.

He explained he was hoping that more entrepreneurs would follow the good doctor’s example in helping to develop school sports and promote education.

The tournament has been split between the Newcastle and Dannhauser Circuit. Each circuit will conduct round robin styled matches, before finally nominating two teams to represent the circuit in the two sports codes onĀ August 2.
