Newcastle’s homeless overwhelmed by support

Newcastle's homeless have found compassion is alive and well, as a second set of donations warmed their hearts.

Winter has bitten, with cruelly cold mornings and even icier nights.

While many of us can escape the clutches of the chilly weather, finding warmth in our offices and homes, there is an entire community who do not have this luxury.

Newcastle’s homeless cannot crawl into a warm bed after a nice hot bath. They cannot find comfort in a house, instead enduring the full brunt of the elements, a bridge their only protection from rain and sun. A small fire their only warmth from plummeting temperatures.

The small group of people living as outcasts, until now…

The plight of the homeless has touched the hearts of Newcastillians, the community rallying to aid these men and women who have been living as figurative trolls beneath the Hardwick Street bridge.

A second set of donations was delivered on Thursday morning, and it was never imagined the initiative to aid the homeless would be such a huge success.

Donations of clothing and tinned food have shown the local community is filled with humanity, compassion flowing through their veins for those in need.

The homeless community were in awe the community had opened its hearts to them. Surprised their lives meant something to strangers.

“I never thought people cared so much. Thank you so much,” said Sibusiso Mbokeka on behalf of the homeless.

On behalf of the Newcastle Advertiser and Newcastle Sun, a big thank-you goes out to everyone who contributed to the initiative.

“Through your kindness, these men and women can face the remainder of winter with a braver face, knowing their chances of fighting off hypothermia are so much better.”

Anyone with more to donate to the homeless, whether food, clothing or warm blankets, these items can be dropped off at the Newcastle Advertiser offices on 70 Paterson Street.
