Warning- car theft on the rise

This comes after a car theft took place on June 9, bringing the toll to six cars stolen in nine days.

Dundee Police have issued a strong warning to all motorists to exercise caution as cases of car thefts and thefts out of cars rocket.
This comes after a car theft took place on June 9, bringing the toll to six cars stolen in nine days. The other five car thefts took place last week whereby five cars were stolen in Dundee from June 1 to June 5.
Police said cars were stolen from the central business district, including from outside Standard Bank, Spar, Gladstone Street and from the Pick ‘n Pay parking lot. In one incident, R60 000 in cash, that was inside one vehicle, was also stolen along with the car. In another vehicle, expensive camera equipment that had been left on the seat of a car, was also stolen.
As a result, Station Commander, Colonel Nyide and Communications Officer, Captain Mbense, have urged motorists to very vigilant when parking or leaving their cars.
“Park in safe places, constantly check on your vehicle, if possible, and ensure vehicles are properly locked before leaving the premises. Also don’t leave valuables unattended to in vehicles,” Colonel Nyide warned.
Colonel Nyide also wished to make the public aware of a new device known as the ‘car jamming device’ that is making its rounds in Dundee. This device, which is a common gate remote, simulates the sound of a locked car, when in proximity of the car, but in actual fact jams the car lock thus leaving it open.
Motorists should be on the lookout for the device and make sure their vehicles are locked before leaving them.
