Jonathan Koch and Francois van der Walt proved to be men among men when they put aside their daily errands and bolted to the aid of an injured man.
The man had been writhing in pain and suffered a seizure believed to be have been caused by a blow to the head. The man consequently fell onto the busy Karellandman Street. Noticing something was amiss, Francois, who was driving from Hattingspruit to Dundee, promptly stopped his vehicle and went to assist the man, who he believed had hurt his ankle and hence had fallen over.
Francois arrived at his side and saw Jonathan run across the road to aid the man.
The pair began to help the man and turned him over on his side. Many passer byers ogled the scene, some even stopped to ask if the man had been run over, before driving off without offering any assistance.
Nonetheless, help soon arrived, comprised of officers from the nearby Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) who are believed to have called Res-Q-medix.
Res-Q-medix sprang to action and two ambulances arrived within minutes of the call.
They quickly worked against the clock to help the man when tragedy struck. He suffered a second seizure whilst on the stretcher being placed in the ambulance. Again, paramedics worked to save his life.
Meanwhile, the Dundee Provincial Hospital ambulance had arrived. According to people on the scene, the paramedics in the state ambulance asked if the man had been involved in an accident or had been run over. Upon notifying the paramedics that this man had suffered a seizure, they retorted by saying, they were called out for a man being run over and if this is not the case then it is not their problem. They also added that there are other paramedics on scene and drove off.
Their departure stirred feelings of anger and raised questions regarding the service delivery of the Hospital but the good Samaritans on scene carried on assisting the man. He was stabilised and taken to Dundee Hospital for further treatment. Francois’s good deed did not end there. He followed the man to the hospital to ensure that he was been treated.
Dundee Hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Sbonelo Dube, was approached for comment after the paramedics of the hospital drove off. He responded by forwarding the complaint to the EMRS department, who will conduct an investigation.
