The Democratic Alliance Councillors write:-

THIS letter is to inform the public about what is happening at the dump site.

The municipality is in a very difficult position with the running of the dump. On the one hand they are supposed to keep it going at as little cost possible, using contractor “A”, while the rehabilitation is supposed to be done by another contractor, call him “B”.

The current site will not be used again, once the new site is operational.

Now “A” is doing a fine job, under the circumstances, but not as it should ideally be, due to budget constraints, also bearing in mind that it is just a temporary arrangement until the new dump is operational.

The reason for the fire last week was because certain people lit the grass which got into the dump on the eastern side. As there is not an excavator on site all the time nothing could be done about the fire until the excavator arrived.

The contractor is now busy forming an edge with soil around the site to stop fires from entering the dump site from burning grass. This has added huge cost to the municipality, but should prevent fire from getting into the site.

On the other hand, contractor “B” is not performing at all and the municipality’s hands are tied because the contractor is accountable to the Department of the Environment. The municipality has taken the matter up with department on several occasions, and it seems that the department is at last taking action against contractor “B”.
