Zaheera Rahim, a former Drakensberg Secondary School pupil, is making waves in KwaZulu-Natal and was recently awarded at the Izwi Youth Movement Awards (IYM).

28-year-old Zaheera teaches at Mjoloba High School and is part of a project called Listen To My Story. This initiative gets the members involved in cleaning and protecting the environment as well as finding invasive alien plants and conducting mini assessments.

The project operates under the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) Eco Wonders in Howick. The team’s work was recently awarded at the IYM awards held on Saturday, June 27 at Howick West Hall. The aim of the awards was to recognise the efforts of young people in Umgeni. Zaheera and her team received the Best Community Involvement award.

When asked how she feels about this achievement, Zaheera answered: “Nothing is possible without my parents’ (Ashraf Ally and Shainaaz Rahim) blessings as well as my beloved husband, Naeem Khan and my in-laws and family support, keeping in mind that God makes everything possible.”
