Burglars face the full extent of the law

Armed and ready for action, detectives, visible police officers and the K9 unit teamed up to bring burglars to the book.

Police conducted a routine stop-and-search operation across all sectors of Newcastle on July 9.

SAPS spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela said the initiative yielded good results.

Kirkland Street crook caught in the act

A 23-year-old man was arrested in the Central Business District for breaking into a home in Kirkland Street on the day of the operation.

The suspect allegedly broke a window in an effort to gain access to the home, while police were conducting patrols in the area.

Officers who witnessed the incident managed to arrest the man before he could flee the scene.

The suspect has since been charged with malicious damaged to property and burglary.

Paterson Street burglar behind bars

A 29-year-old suspect was arrested for burglary in Paterson Street.

The culprit allegedly broke a window, while the victim was home.

Police were contacted and managed to arrest the suspect before he could make his escape.

Arbor Park offender arrested a day later

On July 8, police received word a home had been broken into in Arbor Park at about 2pm.

During the search, police arrested the 23-year-old suspect, who appeared on court on Monday.

Two suspects apprehended in Sunny Ridge

While conducting a search in Sunny Ridge, police arrested two burglars at about 3.50pm.

The men, aged between 20 and 30, were linked to a burglary in Erica Street.

The vehicle they were travelling in was searched and goods to the value of about R30 000 were recovered. The victim later identified the stolen items.

Further investigations revealed the culprits were involved in at least six other burglaries in Sector 4 and 5.

The suspects were detained at Newcastle Police Station, pending the outcome of the trial.

The suspects in the above mentioned cases are expected to appear before a court soon. The incidents are currently subject to extensive investigations.

The community congratulated police on a highly successful operation, and hope to see similar initiatives in future.

In lieu of such a proactive crime ‘lean-sweep, criminals will surely think twice before breaking the law!
