Crime trends – Be vigilant

Be aware of your surroundings. When departing from and arriving at home, please be extra vigilant and remove any 'rubbish' or foreign items from pavements and papers stuck in gates and post boxes.

VRYHEID Neighbourhood Watch would like to encourage the community to be vigilant and remember that most crimes are opportunistic ones.

Women doing shopping should ensure that all items, especially valuables, are kept out of sight as there has been a recent spate of ‘smash and grab’ incidents. When locking your vehicle please check that your vehicle is, in fact, locked and lock it manually with a key, if necessary, as remote jamming in parking lots is once again on the rise in Vryheid.

Crime prevention starts with you, the individual. SAPS and the security companies can only assist once a crime has taken place. Neighbourhood Watch and the authorities can assist with the apprehension of thieves and the recovery of items, but it is the emotional damage, insecurity and trauma that the victims are left with that we cannot help restore.
