Boet Buys and a need for speed

As chairman of Newcastle Raceway Track's committee for the past three years, Boet's dedication to the track has spanned more than 20 years, reflecting his passion for motor sport.

Mention the Oval Track and Boet Buys’s name is sure to be mentioned.

“I am here because I enjoy it, to help boost racers and because the Oval Track is for the town.”

As chairman of Newcastle Raceway Track’s committee for the past three years, Boet’s dedication to the track has spanned more than 20 years, reflecting his passion for motor sport.

“I have been involved since the track’s creation, which was in about 1992 or 1994,” he said.

Known for his role on the track’s committee and as an avid racer, not many know the racing bug has been speeding through Boet’s veins even before the track ever existed.

“I have always had a passion for the sport and used to be a pitman for Dawie Hartung. He used to race in tracks across the country such as in Dundee, Pietermaritzburg and the Rand.”

When the track was built in Newcastle, it was only natural that Boet aimed his focus there.

Working behind the scenes during the track’s early years, it was in only 1997 that Boet first climbed behind the steering wheel to race. Ever since, he has never looked back.

While admitting adrenaline played a major role in his deep-seated love for racing, Boet said there were other factors that contributed.

“To see all the people gathering at the track, all with the same passion, the desire to see action, the spectators, all contribute. Also, when you are on the track, you are there to win, enjoy a good clean race and improve your skill.”

However, to win a race is more than roaring around the track in a fast car.

According to Boet, a lot of planning is involved while behind the steering wheel.

“You need to plan what you want to do and where you want to go; it is a lot like chess. You also have to be a good sportsman, as it is not just about winning. You have to be able to lose in order to win.”

Thus far, Boet’s passion has seen him compete not only locally but racing against some of the country’s best racers as well.

“I got my Natal colours twice at the KwaZulu-Natal Championships, was third in the country for Oval racing and I got a trophy for Best Prepared Car.”

While he has flourished in motor sport, Boet said his sponsors’ and his family’s continuous support enabled him to achieve.

Boet’s supportive son and stepdaughter also participate in the Oval Track.
