REGARDING the Vryheid Herald of July 10, page 1, and the story “Mondlo in darkness”.

Your article is an eye opener. We learn that our Mayor is not interested in the plight of AbaQulusi inhabitants in distress. We hear, a meeting was called in Mondlo. Major electrical failures had resulted in no power delivery for many days and we all know how disturbing temporary load shedding is. We also all know, how very difficult life is, when a complete shut off of electrical power is lasting for days on end.

That our mayor attended the meeting is laudable, her response to the plight of the residents is less so – allegedly she said, that the problems the Mondlo people had to deal with, were none of her business.

The AbaQulusi Municipality’s statement regarding the Mayor’s alleged comment: they dismiss these allegations with the contempt they deserve…. and so on and so on. Quite boring and unconvincing to hear these same whitewashing efforts time and again, when things go wrong.

Of course the AbaQulusi Municipality holds the Mayor in high regard and lauds her activities, but do we locals do so? Do we in AbaQulusi experience the stated improvement of the quality of our lives?

We hear that these improvements are also part of our Mayor’s good track record. And oh dear, also according to the municipal comment, now we even have the famous Third Force here in AbaQulusi – namely “the faceless people”.

How good it would be to have from our Municipality always clear, honest words and deeds with actual true meaning and not politicised verbosity and contempt.

In this context I would dearly like to know what our Mayor of AbaQulusi believes her duties and responsibilities are. Coming to think of it, what about also hearing our municipal councillors’ and employees’ thoughts regarding their duties and responsibilities.
