The accused lured a young male scholar to a hill in the Limehill area of Wasbank near Ladysmith, where he assaulted and raped the youngster

A 26-year-old man, Bonginkosi Mthombeni, was sentenced to an effective 20 years’ imprisonment for rape in the Ladysmith Regional Court last week.

The accused lured a young male scholar, aged 17, to a hill in the Limehill area of Wasbank near Ladysmith in August 2012, where he assaulted and raped the youngster. The crime was reported to Ekuvukeni police and an investigation began.

The suspect was swiftly arrested by members of the Ekuvukeni Visible Policing Unit. The case was taken over by the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation.

Tasked with the investigation, Constable LS Ntshingila successfully opposed bail and the accused remained in custody until he stood trial. During sentencing, the accused was also found unfit to possess a firearm.
