Municipality responds to robbery allegations

In the letter, the municipality describes this article as misleading to the extent that their failure to respond to these allegations would "seriously harm the good name of the Mayor".

THE ABAQULUSI Municipality wrote an open letter to the Vryheid Herald in response to last week’s article titled “Robbed by AbaQulusi?”.

In the letter, the municipality describes this article as misleading to the extent that their failure to respond to these allegations would “seriously harm the good name of the Mayor”.

The Mayor wrote that she found the allegations posed by Nompilo Mpanza both insulting and disgusting to her and MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu as neither of them partake in corruption.

The Mayor went on to describe these allegations as “attacks by forces who are not progressive using the media”, as the local government elections are approaching.

“The tendency displayed by individuals such as Nompilo gives credence to suspicions that there are elements raging a vendetta to drag the image of the Mayor through the mud, by projecting her as the most corrupt,” read the letter.

According to this letter, this is not the first time such allegations have been made as the Mayor was called by the Ilanga Newspaper early this year with regards to this very same matter.

“When we were campaigning in 2010 for 2011 elections I was accused with similar issue which was founded to be untrue. I therefore call anyone who has proof of me being corrupt in any matter including this one or selling of RDP houses as I was called on my phone by one community member saying that there was a Swella woman from Newcastle who came to them saying she had been sent by the Mayor to sell them houses, without asking me of any knowledge they paid money to her, now they are calling after payment asking me of such which I don’t know of let them go to the police and open a case,” read the conclusion.
