Drifting skills wow the crowd at motoring show

Motoring enthusiasts flocked to Blackrock Casino to show off their most prized collections, with 176 cars entered in total.

The eighth annual Blackrock and Supersonic Show Off Your Ride show kicked off last Saturday.

Motoring enthusiasts flocked to Blackrock Casino to show off their most prized collections, with 176 cars entered in total.

The earliest of the entrants got the best spots, and halfway through the day the event had already reached capacity.

This year’s show was nothing short of spectacular, despite David Nel, South Africa’s top drifter being unable to attend.

Tim Stevens, of Rock Raceway, currently ranked third in the country, stood in and wowed the crowd with impeccable drifting skills.

Despite their age, Team oSizweni showcased their own style with no lack of talent.

Even more notably, Dundee’s 360 Boyz surprised everyone by putting a six-year-old behind the wheel.

The event attracts entries from around the country and has been recognised by Newcastle Municipality as an annual tourism event.

Overall winners of the Show and Shine competition were: Avesh Maharaj in first place, Ashlan Abu second and Azad Khan third.

Of the top 10 competitors on the day, Rups Targa was first overall, followed by Abed Kader’s Street Wire Mini in second, and NN Car Mart 2 in third.

“Street Wire has the loudest car in Newcastle for the second year running,” said Mr Kader.

The JDM Crew was awarded ‘Best Crew’ for showing up the best dressed, best branded and entering the most vehicles.

Newcastle’s VW came in a close second.

Newcastle’s Khulekani Simelane struck it lucky by winning the lucky draw competition and taking home a fully fitted Targa Sound System worth R4 000.

“The event has come a long way, and gets bigger every year. This was the first time we got DB Drags involved; if someone has the potential they could set a world record now,” said event organiser, Terrence Chetty.

Organisers thanked DB Drags South Africa, Newcastle Municipality, Supertech Newcastle and everyone who helped make the day a success.
