Women speaks of ATM scamming ordeal

She urged other shoppers to be vigilant at the ATM’s and not accept help from strangers.

A woman (who wished to remain anonymous)strongly urged the public to be cautious and vigilant when using ATM’s after she fell prey to a pair of ATM scammers.
The aggrevied woman went to deposit funds in her account on a Sunday morning at the Nedbank ATM adjacent to Pick n Pay, Dundee, when she was scammed.
” When I went to the ATM,I tried to put my card in the slot, but it was blocked I then tried to read the screen, which read cardless transaction, so I pressed cancel but nothing happened”, the woman, explained.
She further explained that, “two well dressed, young black men, were standing near the ATM. “One of the two approached me and snatched my card while offering his assistance, saying it did the same thing earlier”.
The women was taken aback but agreed. She was then instructed to put in her code.
The other man at the ATM proceeded to talk to the woman, in a bid to divert her attention, while the other man instructed her to punch in  her pin again, which she did.
The men had then left. The woman did not immediately smell a rat,and thought that the machine had swallowed her card.
She left intending to query with the bank the next day and went home.
Around midday a message on her phone, shocked her to the core as it read that money had been withdrawn from her account at a branch in Vryheid.
Immediatly, the woman began recalling events and realised, she had been scammed.
Looking back the woman found that, she took precautions to hide her code on the keyboard but did not realise the ATM was saying, account number which meant her pin was displayed on the screen.
As a result the woman urged the public to be safe, never accept help from strangers and go in groups to the ATM.
“If you ever find yourself in a situation like mine, let them keep your card and walk away dont put your pin in”the woman added.
This is yet another ATM scamming to hit Dundee in recent weeks. The first took place on July 30 but was foiled.
This was after a resident was at the ATM’s in Spar when she was approached by two men.One of the men told her that she had to put in her card again as ABSA had a new system.
While she was putting in her pin, she noticed that the man didn’t move away.Sensing that this was a scam, she cancelled the transaction and called management.
She urged other shoppers to be vigilant at the ATM’s and not accept help from strangers.
