Vryheid Rugby Club – A chance to make history
Van Der Westhuyzen went on to thank the public for their support thus far, encouraging them to continue supporting the local team and Vryheid Rugby Club.
FOLLOWING the withdrawal by Pietermaritzburg Collegians from their scheduled match against Vryheid Rugby Club on Saturday, August 15, Vryheid will automatically advance to the semi-final round of the Junior Murray Cup.
“PMB Collegians withdrawing leaves Vryheid in with a chance to win the Junior Murray Cup for the first time in their history.” stated Jos Robson, Clubs Editor of the Sharks magazine, who visited Vryheid for the previous clash between Vryheid Rugby Club and Durban Collegians.
“We wish all participating Clubs all the best of luck with their respective Knockout Campaign.” added Robson.
In response to this news, Vryheid Rugby Club’s first team captain, Wessie Van Der Westhuyzen had the following to say, “I can only say thank you to all the players who continue to put in the hard work, even when we don’t play. We have to keep this up and we will taste the fruits of our labour at the end of the year.”
The withdrawal of the Pietermaritzburg side subsequently means that Vryheid will automatically advance to the semi-final match, granting the locals an opportunity to contend for the much coveted Junior Murray Cup.
“As we progress to the semi-final, I can only say that I am proud of the sense of commitment from the boys,” added Van Der Westhuyzen. “It is always great to play in a final, so we just have to try our best and enjoy the sport we love.”
Vryheid were knocked out of the qualifying round of the Castle Murray Cup recently, following an epic match on home soil between the local side and SA Home Loans Durban Collegians, which ended in a 66 – 0 defeat by the visiting squad.
“It will be a great honour for me to lead our team to a winning season,” added the captain. “and that is our mission now that we are in the semi-finals.”
On a more personal note, Van Der Westhuyzen expressed his gratitude to everyone who puts in so much effort behind the scenes.
“I want to thank Sign Centre for their help with the funding of the new bar, as well as my mother, Sandra Van Der Westhuyzen, who made the new curtains for the hall. Thanks to Alicia Rudolph and her team, Juan and Stephan, for their hard work behind the bar and at the club so far.”
