The search is over. Avesh Maharaj was the winner at the recent Blackrock and Supersonic Show Off Your Ride show.
However, entering competitions was not what he had planned. ” I initially bought and modified the car for my son, Shaheel. He loves cars, and probably knows more types of cars than I do.”
The 10-year old Shaheel can only expect to be getting behind the wheel of his dream car when he gets his licence. ”And not a day before that,” said his father.
Mr Maharaj said taking home Newcastle motoring enthusiasts’ most coveted trophy came at no small cost.
”It becomes an addiction that starts consuming most of your time. I’ve had sleepless nights trying to get it just right, but it was well worth it.”
On his first entry, just over a year, and a few hundred thousand Rands later, his 2008 VW Golf GTi was judged to have the potential to be called the best in Northern KZN.
”I’m not happy yet. I’m trying to keep the interior as original as possible, but there’s always more work to do on your car. It’s that little extra you change that sets your car apart.” he said.
Mr Maharaj attributed the achievement to friends who inspired and guided his enthusiasm for the sport.
”I’d like to thank the organisers for giving people like me the platform to express our passion. I have to also thank Walkot Cars, Streetwire and Sleek auto for their outstanding work in bringing my vision to life.”
He confessed to have started work on a new project. ”But I can’t say any more just yet.”
With his first win under his belt, expect to see Mr Maharaj at Show and Shine future competitions across the province.
