Operation Basadi yields remarkable results

Basadi Bafiela is the latest in the series of joint operations to make its presence known in Newcastle.
Police in conjunction with officials from the departments of Correctional Services, Labour, Agriculture and Home Affairs clamped down on offenders throughout the Newcastle cluster on August 20.
Newcastle east and west, Utrecht, Ingogo, Charlestown and Normandien all fell within the scope of the initiative.
Law enforcement officers conducted the following routine operations:
– Roadblocks.
– Stop-and-search.
– Tavern and shebeen raids.
– Vehicle and foot patrols.
Crimes reported recently were given priority in an effort to bring criminals to book. Officers also conducted extensive searches for wanted suspects.
Five notices were issued due to non-compliance to the Liquor Act 59 of 2003. A suspect was also arrested after being linked to recent burglary.
Furthermore, an illegal immigrant and 14 other suspects were apprehended after being implicated in various crimes.
According to police, the operation will run until the end of August.
Amid the success of Operation Fiyela, the community welcomed initiatives like Basadi Bafiela.
