Rocking it up with Livingston

The band made a name for itself after the release of its first album, Sign Language and has performed in Germany, America and Switzerland and are headed to Australia and Canada in 2016.

Beukes Willemse grew up in the Muller’s Pass area, attended Huttenpark Primary School and has his roots deeply embedded in our community.

However, after matriculating, he relocated to London in pursuit of a music career, never imagining how true his dreams would come.

There he met Germans, Jan Siekmann and Jakob Nebel, Phil Magee from England and fellow South African, Chris van Niekerk, and the band Livingston was born.

Since then, the band has performed in Germany, America and Switzerland and are headed to Australia and Canada in 2016.

Last Wednesday, Newcastillians had the opportunity to see the band in action, as they performed their blend of rock.

“We were touring South Africa and I met with some friends, who asked why we didn’t come and perform in Newcastle. I called in a favour, and here we are!” Beukes laughed.

In South Africa, Livingston performed at Oppiekoppie. The band is geared up to continue taking the music world by storm.

Beukes said he and his band friends thoroughly enjoyed the lives they were leading.

“It is seeing different places, meeting cool people and doing stuff like this. It needs to be in your veins though. It takes persistence to go into music, as it is more difficult now than in previous years, but I would say go for it,” he concluded.
