Andre’s amazing recovery inspires all

Doctors are amazed at Andre's recovery.

There’s only one word to describe Johan Andre Vorster: Miracle.

After suffering third-degree burns over 85% of his body, doctors told his family to prepare for the worst. Andre and fellow municipal electrician, Kallie Karelse, were both severely burnt after an electrical sub station they were working on, exploded in December.

Kallie is back at work, thankfully, but nine months after the traumatic ordeal, Andre is trying to get his life back on track. Andre spent a total of 84 days in ICU, 20 days in an induced coma and underwent 43 surgeries in the space of seven months.

Despite undergoing so much, and enduring unbelievable pain, Andre remains positive and still manages to retain his sense of humour. Currently Andre is back at home but still has to go through more surgeries in the future.

His arms do not work properly and he can’t straighten them or lift them high. Andre explained that because his bones were very brittle and broken after the fire, he has irregular bone growth as the new bones have started growing in. Doctors can’t correct it as yet because his skin is still very thin and blisters once in a while.

However, despite what still needs to be done, doctors are amazed at his recovery. Most people don’t survive more than 30-40% burns over their body.

“The Lord didn’t want me to die, he kept me alive for a reason,” Andre said. He thanked all those who rallied behind his family and prayed for him during his ordeal. He also personally thanked those who went out of their way to help.

Samantha Parkhouse, Andre’s fiancée, described how overwhelmingly sad it was to see him in that condition. “When I received that call to say he was in an accident, it was terrible. Seeing him in that hospital was worse.” Andre’s amazing journey has served as an inspiration to others. Doctors used to get him to tell his story to other patients as a way of calming them down.

“Although you are in pain, there is always someone worse. Never give up, never give up hope. Always believe and pray”. Andre’s strength comes from God and he explained that before every procedure he said a little prayer which helped him through. His positive outlook on life and his never-say-die attitude have touched all those who know him.

Andre and his fiancée, Samantha, are now looking forward to their future together and are already planning their wedding for February next year.
