Annual Jalsa, Graduation ceremony hosted by Darul Uloom

Parents and family members could not help but shed a tear or two as the students were garlanded, handed their official certificates and had turbans wrapped around their heads

The Darul Uloom Qadria Ghareeb Nawaaz notched up its 18th annual Jalsa & Graduation Ceremony over the weekend, and drew hundreds of parents and families of the students, as well as well-wishers from many parts of Africa.

The effort put into this mammoth task by the Uloom and a small band of volunteers paid dividends when the majority of the attendees paid glowing plaudits for the manner in which quality Islamic education was disseminated to students, many of whom hail from very poor families.

As always, Al Haaj Muhammad Owais Raza Qaadiri was the draw-card and he did not disappoint his vast throng of fans.

He mesmerised the listeners throughout the three days with his melodious rendition of old and new naaths.

Spiritually-uplifting discourses were delivered by local and overseas dignitaries.

Moulana Arshad Qaaderi Misbahi of the United Kingdom delivered his speech in English and held the listeners in awe as he focused on the reasons of the growth of Islam in every corner of the world.

The secretary of the World Islamic Mission, Allama Qamruzzamaan Azmi, delivered a thought-provoking address in Urdu.

Those who understand the popular dialect wished the Allama had spoken at greater length as he delivered his message on the significance of God Almighty and His creation with irrefutable examples. The inimitable Professor Dr Sayed Muhammad Amin Mia has built up a huge following of enthusiasts all over the world for the manner in which he conveys his message and the quality of the content. He, too, did not disappoint.

The highlight was the recognition and acknowledgement of the successful completion of the respective courses by 18 students.

Besides the students themselves, who beamed with immense satisfaction and gratitude, there were parents and family members who could not help but shed a tear or two as the students were garlanded, handed their official certificates and had turbans wrapped around their heads to signify the milestones they had reached in their studying career.

It was indeed a weekend to remember, and Hazrat Allama Sayed Muhammad Alimuddeen and his staff, together with the organisers, can justifiably take credit for placing our town on the map of Islamic education.

A small step, indeed, for the Daul Uloom Qadria Ghareeb Nawaaz, but a giant leap for Quranic edification.
