Dundee Provincial Hospital investigated for discrimination

South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is investigating a case of discrimination at Dundee Provincial Hospital after a student nurse was ordered to remove her head scarf.

South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is investigating a case of discrimination at Dundee Provincial Hospital after a student nurse was ordered to remove her head scarf.

The student, who preferred not to be identified, is a student at a Nquthu nursing school.

She claims that in March she arrived at the hospital to complete practical training and that she wore a head scarf without anyone telling her to remove it.

However, the Courier was told that when she was transferred to another ward, she was ordered to remove the head scarf as it was not part of the laid down Dundee Hospital uniform requirements.

She laid a complaint with the SAHRC in May.

The SAHRC have asked the hospital to respond to them but it is unclear if this has happened to date.

The student now fears that she will be forced to leave Dundee Hospital and this may disrupt her training.
