Family narrowly escapes blazing caravan fire

The Abdulla family and other neighbouring residents have grown concerned about their safety and feel that the man is a threat to the community

The calmness of Sunday afternoon was disturbed when residents alerted the Abdulla family of a fire engulfing a caravan in their yard.

“If it were not for the screams, making me aware of the fire, my family and I would not have been alive today,” said a still visibly shaken Adham Abdulla.

According to Mr Abdulla a light blue caravan positioned between an electrical box and his house in 14th Street, was set alight by a man who verbally threatened to set the caravan on fire.

The man was said to have been drunk at the time of allegedly setting the caravan alight. The Abdullas were at no point aware of fire, but were aware of the threat.

Residents believe that the man is constantly intoxicated by either drugs or alcoholic substances.

Fortunately no injuries were sustained. A man who lives in the caravan was away at the time.

The Abdulla family and other neighbouring residents have grown concerned about their safety and feel that the man is a threat to the community.

The raging fire caused extensive damage to the exterior and interior estimated up to R5 000.

Mr Abdulla reported the matter to the Estcourt police on Sunday, October 11.

The family is still disturbed by the thought of what could have happened if the fire was not brought to their attention. They would like to thank all those who assisted to control the blaze.
