Zero fee increase for students

President Zuma's announcement was preceded by marches from thousands of students around the country

A large number of students walked away victorious this afternoon after President Jacob Zuma announced that there would be a zero fee increase at higher education level in the 2016 academic year.

Zuma spoke at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, followed by a meeting which he held with various stakeholders, including university councils.

President Zuma’s announcement was preceded by marches from thousands of students at different universities in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Union Buildings in Pretoria over plans to increase tuition fees by 10.5%, which was later capped at 6℅.
