Twelve life terms for Nquthu serial rapists

The accused had terrorised women aged between 16 and 37 from May 2013 until their arrest in August 2013.

Yesterday, Pietermaritzburg High Court convicted and sentenced Nkosinathi Ngcobo, 23, and Sifiso Buthelezi, 19, for crimes they committed in 2013 at Luvisi area, Nquthu.

Ngcobo was sentenced to 12 life terms for rape and robbery and Buthelezi was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for 12 cases of rape and robbery each.

“The sentences that have been meted out to the accused befits the crime they had committed and we hope it will bring closure to the victims,” said KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

The accused had terrorised women aged between 16 and 37 from May 2013 until their arrest in August 2013.

The accused had accosted women in the area where they would threaten them with knives, rob them of their belongings and rape them.

Twelve women opened cases of rape and robbery at Nquthu police station.

The dockets were transferred to Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.

Lieutenant Ngobeni commended Dundee FCS detectives in their persistence in stopping the rapists from terrorising the community.
