Mathematics is often regarded as the bane of many a school pupil.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for those who wish to conquer Mathematics.
Last Tuesday, school teachers were introduced to CMaths, a system focused on developing mathematical skills in children.
Christo Rossouw, national sales and marketing manager of CMaths, said since the establishment of CMaths in 2005, it was only a matter of time before a branch was brought to Newcastle.
“We are hoping to have a branch in every town in South Africa by December. Today, we wanted to announce to Newcastle that we are now here to help children with their maths,” he said.
CMaths is an acronym for Calculating Mental Arithmetic Tuition, where children are taught maths with the help of the Japanese Soroban (abacus).
While the CMath programme was not yet available to high school pupils, it was available for children from two and a half to 12 years old.
“We start children off so young because they are like sponges, and we are still developing a course for teenagers.”
Mr Rossouw said one of the ways to get youngsters to absorb the teachings was to ensure it was done in a fun way.
Fully qualified teachers will give classes at primary schools and classes will consist of seven children to ensure that individual attention..
“However, we are willing to even come out for one child,” he emphasised.
Two youngsters from the Vryheid branch demonstrated their mathematical abilities, which captivated the attention of teachers present.
