As another year comes to an end, we take a look back at the stories that made headlines for the weirdest reasons.
They may not have been breaking news but they definitely got the attention of all those who read them.
Coming in at number 5 is:
The Traffic Light Saga:
Who can forget the notorious traffic light saga. The traffic lights at the Tri-Star intersection of Union, Tatham and Karel Landman Streets became hugely popular with motorists who couldn’t keep track of when it was working and when it wasn’t.
At one stage, residents even planned on fixing the lights themselves, in a bid to sort out the situation.

Murder most fowl:
It was a murder which both stunned and confused a community. A chicken, decapitated and dumped in a drain on Beaconsfield Street. It did allow for a very ‘punny’ story though. Sadly, the murder was never solved.

Mythical snake blamed for drought
One of the theories surrounding the recent drought was that the ‘Inkanyamba’ was unhappy. The mythical serpent-like creature, which lived in the river, complained that the river was so polluted that it could no longer stay there. As a result, we didn’t get rain.

Vacancies for Dannhauser Hospital released
This may be not be a funny or weird story but amount of pageviews it received, definitely was. When the hospital opted not to advertise its vacancies in the local newspaper, but rather at the local ANC office, we took it upon ourselves to share this knowledge with everyone. Unfortunately, people started phoning the Courier office soon after, wanting to apply for the posts.
