The plight of local cricketers is well-documented.
Despite assurances from the municipality that the Paradise Grounds would be ready for matches in this season, perpetual problems have players run out.
A veteran player spoke openly about matters ruining the cricket experience for many.
“At this stage,” he said a few weeks earlier, “the municipality needs to begin with pitch preparation processes, and not after the season begins.”
The peak of complaints from cricketers was damage to the sight screen, as a result of mighty winds at the beginning of the year, and a lack of adequate lighting.
At the time, the municipality had not yet undertaken repairs.
Sight screens are undoubtedly an integral part of cricket, as they allow players to better see approaching deliveries.
“If there is a pacey guy, someone can get seriously hurt.”
Left with only a handful of mostly playable surfaces upon which to host matches, the local cricket union has made costly plans to ensure games take place.
“We are using the Newcastle High School grounds, because the Sutherland Street grounds are not prepared,” the veteran admitted.
At other times, cricketers themselves have had to trim and mark the pitch, although the municipality has repairs the nets, entrance and part of the change room. These matters were brought to the attention of officials, for urgent response.
Head of Parks, Recreation and Cleansing, Vish Govender had not issued a statement or comment on the complaints of local cricketers, at the time of going to print.
Previously, he mentioned a series of upgrades at the Paradise Grounds. “Our job is to serve the community and I welcome any SMSes to my cellphone – 082 887 5648.”
