Water crisis set to hit home

Water supply to Vryheid households may be cut off altogether in the near future to conserve the precious little water the town has left.

Water supply to Vryheid households may be cut off altogether in the near future to conserve the precious water remaining in the dams. This, and other water conservation issues, are being discussed at a water crisis meeting in Ulundi this morning.

Once water supply is discontinued, residents will have to collect a water ration from one of the JoJo tanks or boreholes in town. Access to water will be closely monitored to ensure that the little water accumulated during the rainy season is enough to see the town through the dry months quickly approaching.

While disaster has been looming for several months in this regard and a water crisis has been imminent, water restrictions which were eventually implemented a few months ago were not effective enough to avoid the dire predicament in which we now find ourselves.

East Coast radio and the Gift of the Givers brought much needed relief to Vryheid this morning, supplying the town with 360 000 liters of drinking water, which will be distributed from the Klip Kerk.

Besides Durban, Newcastle, Secunda, Richard’s Bay, Witbank and Pongola are some of the town’s that have answered Vryheid’s call for help.
