Shocking road going up to the monuments
Even Ladysmith residents seldom head up there anymore, unless they have a 4X4 vehicle that can handle treacherous terrain
Tourists and local community members are complaining about the state of the road leading up to the monuments.
It has been described as a terrible, gravel road with huge potholes and trenches which makes it virtually impossible to drive on.
Tourists complain that they spend money to come and visit Ladysmith, and they look forward to taking in the historical sights (which includes visiting the monuments on the outskirts of town). Then comes the let-down when they are faced with the shockingly poor condition of the road and are afraid to risk damaging their vehicles. So, ultimately, going to the monuments gets struck off their list of interesting things to do.

“It is very sad that the local municipality has no interest in fixing our roads, not even the ones they know tourists will be travelling on to visit the battlefields or grave sites associated with the Anglo-Boer War,” fumed IFP councillor Abbas Warasally.
“I was really disappointed not to visit the monuments in Ladysmith. I read about them and was really hoping to see them for myself, but due to the terrible state of the road leading up to the area, we could not,” said a despondent and disappointed tourist who was in town recently.
According to the municipality, there are plans in action to repair that road within the next three weeks.
