An inquest has been opened by Newcastle SAPS after the body of an unidentified man was found in an open field in Aviary Hill yesterday afternoon (August 27).

According to Amajuba District SAPS spokesperson Constable Nonjabulo Langa, the deceased was discovered by a municipal worker conducting an oversight visit following reports of illegal dumping in the area.

The municipal worker made the grim discovery at about 15:00.

“While at the site, he spotted a naked male covered with a brown blanket in the field. He immediately called the police for help,” said Langa.

The man was declared dead at the scene by a paramedic. No visible injuries were found on his body.

An inquest case has been opened and will be subject to further police investigation.

Councillor raises service delivery concerns

Ward 2 Democratic Alliance Councillor Bebsie Cronjè was also at the scene on Thursday afternoon and has called on Newcastle Municipality to urgently improve service delivery following the discovery.

She said the area has become an illegal dumping site, raising concerns about the ongoing neglect and deterioration of the area.

Cronjè has called on the municipality to address the illegal dumping and ensure that problem areas such as this receive the necessary attention before they become further hazards to the community.
