All systems go on Utrecht Street

The rehabilitation of Utrecht Street is finally underway after a 6 month delay.

Business owners in Utrecht Street were invited to the official hand-over meeting for the Utrecht Street rehabilitation program at the Library Hall on Monday evening.
At the meeting, it was officially announced that the contract for the rehabilitation of Utrecht Street had been awarded to the contractor, Thembalethu Civils.
The rehabilitation process started on Wednesday, and according to Sizwe Khumalo of Thembalethu Civils it is set to be carried out for 10 weeks from Deputation Street right down to East Street.
The rehabilitation will involve the removal and replacement of existing sub-surface layer works, storm water drainage, kerbs and asphalt, and the renewal of all road markings.
According to Sizwe, the contractor will work on one lane, finish it, then start off with the other in order to make things easier on the businesses.
Such arrangements have been made as both the municipality and the contractor are aware of the fact that this is arguably Vryheid’s busiest street, and the rehabilitation is not going to happen without some inconvenience to businesses and residents.
Ramps will also be made available for vehicle access to the businesses as the construction moves along down the street.
