Pres Zuma announces local government elections will be held ‘three months after May 18’
Pres Zuma urged all citizens 18 years or older to register during the first voter registration weekend of March 5-6.
After the chaotic scenes in Parliament last night with the State of the Nation address, one of the clearest point gleaned from President Zuma’s speech was that the local government elections will be held three months after May 18, the date of the last election.
He urged all citizens 18 years or older to register during the first voter registration weekend of March 5-6.
PresZuma said national government would implement more active monitoring and accountability measures this year.
These included municipality visits, spot checks of supply chain processes, implementing recommendations of forensic reports, and increased interventions to help struggling municipalities. Endumeni Municipality has experienced its worst five years since the municipality was founded in 2000 with suspensions dominating the institution rather than service delivery.
Municipal Manager TP Biyela’s suspension is now in its third year. He is still receiving a salary while the Court case drags on. The municipality is also dogged by a staggering R28-million electricity loss a year due to theft and illegal power connections.
Pes Zuma said they had developed a 10-point back-to-basics plan. This would include allowing communities to provide feedback of their experience with local government.
