Vandals target cemetery, again
VANDALS are once targeting the Vryheid cemetery.
VANDALS are once again targeting the Vryheid cemetery.
According to Bertie Slabbart, who is the caretaker of the cemetery, some people seem to have no respect whatsoever for the dead, as they have repeatedly vamdalised the cemetery in the past.
It is unclear whether it is the same vandals who have returned, and the motive behind these actions is also unknown.
“They come in here and walk all over the place, even jumping over the gravestones and the security guard does nothing about it,” he said.
Only having one security guard on duty at the cemetery, seems to be making matters very difficult, as this means that the guard is unable to see all that is happening at different areas.
Last year, a case was opened after vandals targeted the memorial wall, but nothing ever came of it.
The local neighbourhood watch also set out to keep a lookout on the cemetery, but things seemed to have gone back to normal until recently.
The SAPS have been alerted and will be keeping an eye on the cemetery to ensure tighter security.
