Condomising in the fight against STIs
From February 10, until February 16, the health department ran its annual National STI/Condom week.
The Department of Health (DoH) is upping its game and educating residents on sexually transmitted diseases.
According to the DoH, people are reluctant to seek medical treatment for STIs out of fear of being victimised.
From February 10, until February 16, the health department ran its annual National STI/Condom week.
During the week long campaign, health officials visited Amajuba TVET campuses in Madadeni and Newcastle, as well as the Newcastle Municipality, to educate people on a healthy sexual life.
While the campaign focused on reducing the spread of STIs, but also to curb the spread of HIV and Aids and to minimise teenage pregnancy.
During the week-long programme, a wellness programme was held in conjunction with STI screening and management, TB screening, pregnancy testing, talks on sexual reproductive health and condom distribution.
What you need to know about sexually transmitted STIs:
STIs are infections which can be transferred from one person to another through any type of sexual contact, including kissing and the use of sexual toys. STIs are also opens the risk of contracting HIV.
Common signs and symptoms of STIs:
1. Discharge from the penis, vagina or anus.
2. Abnormal, smelly, discoloured vaginal discharge.
3. Pain or discomfort when urinating and during sex.
4. Lumps and bumps on the genitals.
5. Genital sores, blisters, itching, irritation or pain.
STIs can be prevented through the use of condoms, and residents are encouraged to visit their doctors or the nearest clinic if they exhibit any of the above
Patients undergoing treatment for an STI were urged to complete the entire medical programme.
If your partner has been treated for an STI, it is important to be checked as well, even if you have not displayed any of the symptoms.
