Finnemore Street turns into a potential dumpsite

Is Finnemore Street, Paradise, turning into a dumping site, as residents discard unwanted trash in the area?

“Finnemore Street has become an eyesore and dumping should not be allowed in a residential area, especially along a riverbank!” exclaimed Mark Jacobs, a resident in Paradise.

Construction rubble is the most prevalent refuse dumped along the street, and Mr Jacobs felt residents should rather use the facilities available for dumping, rather than trashing Finnemore Street.

“There are allocated dumping sites where builders can go dump their rubble,” he said.

Acting Ward 4 Councillor, Bertie Meiring, expressed his dismay at the continuous dumping.

“I don’t know what to do about it,” he claimed.

Cllr Meiring explained he had reported the issue to the municipality to clean the area but it proved to be a losing battle.

“The municipality will clean it, but the next day, it will look exactly the same.”

Cllr Meiring suspected businesses played a significant role in the illegal dumping.

“Business people do not always want to ride to the dump site and we might have to look at creating a dumping site similar to the one at the Show Grounds.”

The following media enquiry was submitted to the municipality’s Communications Department:

1. What steps can be taken to minimise dumping?

2. What do the by-laws state about illegal dumping?

3. Are the by-laws being implemented?

4. Will the municipality attend to the matter and remove the rubbish?

5. When can the community expect the municipality to attend to the matter?

6. Why has the refuse not been cleared up yet?

7. If people are seen dumping refuse, who should residents contact?

The Communications Department failed to respond by the set deadline.
