Bleak forecast for town’s roads

Which of Newcastle's roads would you label as the worst?

Will roads maintenance form part of this year’s budget?

Councillors and residents alike hope so, with a lack of maintenance funding blamed for the worsening state of Newcastle’s roads.

In fact, some are of the opinion town is heading for disaster.

Although the municipality has undertaken repairs to many of the roads highlighted by the Newcastle Advertiser previously, Exco councillor, Bebsie Cronjé said more funding had to be allocated for maintenance of the streets.

“Some are well maintained, but you need to look at quality of work done.”

Cllr Cronjé said more could be done to maintain roads, but intent was cast aside by a lack of responsibility and supervision.

“No one in an acting position will take responsibility for what is happening.”

Asked to provide his views on the status quo, a provincial Government source said maintenance was a better long-term solution than building a new road.

He believed Newcastle’s roads were better than elsewhere, yet far below standard.

“It takes longer these days to fix potholes and damaged kerbs than it did a few years ago.”

Stating this problem spread to areas like grass cutting and street lights, he said a there was ‘serious lethargy’ in delivering services to the town.

“We expect those who handle this municipality to be more responsible, not just because Local Government Elections are around the corner.”

While these strong opinions sum up many residents’ thoughts, the municipality itself is yet to formally address the matter and provide much needed answers.
